The University of Toronto Libraries, in partnership with the Online Learning Strategies and Academic and Collaborative Technologies units of ITS, have awarded three University of Toronto instructors grants of up to $3,000.00 each to support the work involved in finding and adapting existing open textbooks and resources for a U of T course.
This grant project aims to encourage the use of open textbooks and resources at the University of Toronto, aligning with eCampusOntario’s provincial strategy to “lead through open and collaborative practices” and contribute to the growing activity in support of Open Educational Resources (OER) across the province. OERs are “any type of educational materials that are in the public domain or introduced with an open license. The nature of these open materials means that anyone can legally and freely copy, use, adapt and re-share them. OERs range from textbooks to curricula, syllabi, lecture notes, assignments, tests, projects, audio, video and animation.” (UNESCO)
Projects were assessed on their potential impact on cost-savings to students, positive affect the student experience engagement in learning and/or in content production, and the potential for the reuse of the OER in subsequent terms.
All OER adaptations that result from this funding will be made available on the eCampusOntario’s Open Library under an open license, such as a Creative Commons license (CC BY or CC BY-NC), and will meet compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

William Ju, Associate Professor, Department of Human Biology
Dr. Ju is a 2019 eCampusOntario OE Fellow and is the author of “Neuroscience: Canadian 1st Edition Open Textbook”. This grant has been awarded to further projects related to existing OERs for better adoption and adaptation in neuroscience courses, extending his work with eCampusOntario. Bernardo Galvao-Sousa, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics
Professor Sousa’s project aims to adapt an open textbook on mathematical modelling for MAT231 and MAT234, both of which reach around 120 students per year. The potential cost savings for this project is approximately $200 per student.
Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio, Assistant Professor, Department of Spanish and Portuguese
Professor Osornio seeks to adapt an OER for U of T Spanish language courses. Focusing on listening comprehension for beginners, intermediate- and advanced-levels, Osornio sees the OER being introduced in SPA100Y, SPA220Y, and SPA320Y, meaning the project could reach over 1000 students per academic year.
