We’re pleased to share that the University of Toronto Libraries has launched a newly redesigned website at library.utoronto.ca, a major milestone in our ongoing digital transformation.

The new site brings together content from more than a dozen previously independent library websites into one modern, accessible, and unified platform. It’s the first major redesign in nearly a decade, making it easier for students, faculty, researchers, donors and alumni to connect with collections, services, and expertise across all three campuses.

“For many people, the Libraries’ website is their first point of contact with us and with the University’s vast network of resources and spaces,” said Lillian Hogendoorn, Web Project Manager and Content Strategy Librarian. “We wanted the new site to feel welcoming, inclusive, and connected — a single-entry point that reflects how our community engages with the Libraries every day.”

Why we redesigned the site

The Libraries’ website is one of the university’s most-visited digital service points, supporting millions of users each year in their research, teaching, and learning. The new design makes it simpler to navigate and easier to find what you need — from library hours and study spaces to research help, data management tools, and publishing support.

The redesign also strengthens our digital infrastructure, improving usability, accessibility, and security. As academic libraries and research institutions face growing cybersecurity challenges, we’ve taken important steps to ensure that our systems and data remain protected, resilient, and trustworthy.

Designed with our community

The redesign was a collaborative effort led by the Libraries’ Information Technology Services (UTL ITS) team, with input from librarians, staff, and communications specialists from across UTL.

From the outset, our priority was listening. We gathered insights from students and faculty through focus groups, surveys, and in-person usability testing. Analytics from the previous website helped us pinpoint common frustrations and habits, shaping a design that reflects how our university community searches, learns, and works.

“User testing and feedback guided us every step of the process,” said Hogendoorn “The result is a site shaped by our community — simple to use, easy to trust, and built around what people told us they need most.”

Explore and discover each library’s unique character: For the fist time collections, exhibitions, and projects from across UTL are brought together in one place, highlighting the breadth and individuality of the library system.

Built for usability and performance: A modern, secure infrastructure ensures reliable access and a seamless experience across devices and networks.

What’s next

In the months ahead, we’ll continue bringing library websites together under one platform while expanding features, refining integrations, and improving the experience based on user feedback and analytics.

Existing bookmarks and links to the old library site will remain active until January 2026, after which they will redirect to the new site.

The new website works hand in hand with LibrarySearch, the tool used to find books, articles, and other materials. While LibrarySearch continues to evolve, the redesigned Libraries website makes it easier to find and access it — alongside the many other services, tools, and spaces that support learning and research across U of T.
