Following an extensive international search, the University of Toronto and U of T Libraries are pleased to announce the appointment of the next University Chief Librarian, Constantia Constantinou.

Constantinou is an academic leader and scholar who currently serves as executive director of the Whiting Foundation in New York. She previously held the roles of vice-provost and director of libraries at the University of Pennsylvania and dean of university libraries at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook and SUNY Maritime College.

Constantinou brings extensive experience in academia, library leadership and building key partnerships. She is a Fulbright Scholar and Distinguished Alumna of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Queens College, and has held a number of leadership roles at professional organizations, including the Association of Research Libraries and the International Federation of Library Associations.

As a scholar with a global perspective whose work has focused on library technologies, digital access and preservation, Constantinou was drawn to U of T Libraries’ scale, its world-renowned reputation, and its strong and committed community of staff, users, and donors.

She sees the academic library as a place where preservation and innovation can exist hand-in-hand, ideally positioned to meet the current moment of rapid transformation.

Her priorities include expanding digital access, supporting computational and AI-enabled research, strengthening information literacy and ethical scholarship, and ensuring that world-class collections, archives and rare materials remain accessible and relevant for future generations.

She will assume her new role at U of T Libraries on September 1, 2026 and will be serving a seven-year term.
