Classes are back in session, the days are getting shorter, and pumpkin spice lattes are being served up in record numbers. Fall in Toronto is back – and it’s the perfect time to balance study time with fresh air, whether that means finding a quiet spot outside to read, taking your notes to a bench surrounded by turning trees, or walking between classes and enjoying the slow, reflective rhythm of the season.

Campus Wi-Fi works outdoors, so grab a sweater, pack up your laptop and explore some of our favourite library-adjacent outdoor study spots.

1. University College Quad (near University College Library)

Steps away from one of U of T’s most photographed libraries is the UC Quad (formally known in architecture terms as a quadrangle). Tucked away from the bustle of downtown Toronto, this space offers tables, chairs, and plenty of ledges to perch on.

Surrounded by the Romanesque Revival architecture of University College, you’ll feel like a character in a cozy gothic novel. Looking for something to enjoy outside of coursework? The UC Library has a wide selection of graphic novels and bestselling titles you can borrow for leisure reading.

2. Lester B. Pearson Garden for Peace and Understanding (near E.J. Pratt Library)

True to its name, this serene and lushly green space outside of E.J. Pratt Library brings an instant sense of calm. Tucked beside the Victoria College Quad, this small oasis was designed by landscape architect Paul Ehnes to commemorate the life of former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, as well as his contributions to world peace (he remains Canada’s only recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize). The sound of the waterfall and the stillness of the pond invite a moment of pause, perfect for catching your breath between classes.

Had your fill of the serene garden? Spread out a blanket on the Victoria College Quad to enjoy a snack or some leisure reading, and don’t forget to tip your hat to the statue honouring the legendary poet (and longtime Victoria College professor) E.J. Pratt outside the library.

3. Philosophers Walk (near Music Library & Bora Laskin Law Library)

Contrary to its name, Philosopher’s Walk is actually a perfect spot to sit on a bench or spread out a blanket and get some work done. This picturesque footpath follows the old ravine of the buried Taddle Creek and is lined with plenty of benches and mature trees that offer shade on bright days. It’s also a great spot for people-watching, as it serves as a popular thoroughfare to Bloor Street for students, faculty, and Toronto locals alike. If you’re lucky, you might even get a dose of pet therapy from one of the many dogs out on their afternoon stroll. You’ll also find easy access to both the Music Library and the Law Library just off east side of the Walk, giving you everything you need for a productive afternoon.

4. Front Campus Quad (Near Gerstein Science Information Centre)

The front campus quad at Kings College Circle is not exactly a hidden gem, as evident by the steady stream of students cutting across to catch their next class on any given day. But have you ever stopped to really take in all that this green space has to offer? The outer ring has ample seating with moveable iron chairs and tables, and beautiful landscaping that changes with the seasons. It's also an ideal place to take advantage of the Pick Up & Play program at Gerstein Science Information Centre to the east, where you can borrow sporting equipment like frisbees, soccer balls, volleyballs and ladder ball. Items are loaned out for up to five hours (no renewals), so you and your friends can squeeze in a quick game between classes. Just return your gear to the Short-Term Loans Desk before closing time, and you’re set to get back to studying.

5. Rotman Patio (Near Milt Harris Library)

A hidden gem in the heart of campus, the Rotman Building has two patios with sweeping views of Robarts Library and St George Street. One is on the fourth floor just outside the Milt Harris Library, and you can access the second one from the 3rd floor directly below. Surrounded by green living roofs, the patios feel like your own personal corner office. It’s also a great spot for lunch, with the Exchange Café and Second Cup right in the building for a quick snack or coffee. Just don’t forget a sweater — it can get breezy up there!
