This policy explains noise expectations at U of T Scarborough Library.

The library provides different study spaces to support a range of activities. Please choose a space that matches your needs and be respectful of others.

If noise is an issue, you can report it to library staff.

Quiet zones

The library has three types of study spaces.

Silent study room

Room AC338 and AC385 are silent study spaces.

No conversation
Phones must be turned off
Electronics are allowed
Use headphones for all audio

Quiet study areas

Most areas of U of T Scarborough Library are quiet study spaces, including the Reading Room near the entrance.

Quiet or whispered conversation only
Phones must be on vibrate
Electronics are allowed
Use headphones for all audio

Study rooms

Study rooms are for group work and conversation.

Talking is allowed
Phones must be on vibrate
Electronics are allowed

Please be considerate of others when using shared spaces.

Monitoring and enforcement

Library staff monitor noise levels and will remind users of this policy when needed.

If noise continues, staff will give up to three warnings. After this, you may be asked to leave the library.

If you do not leave when asked, Campus Safety may be contacted.

Repeated issues may result in a temporary suspension of library access.

All users must follow the University of Toronto Libraries Code of Conduct and the U of T Student Code of Conduct.

Reporting noise

Did you know that the library has a ‘report noise’ link? It’s completely anonymous. So, if someone is noisy, put in a report, and our library staff will attend to it soon!
