The Gerstein Science Information Centre has 16 shared carrels that can be used as a as a quiet working space:

Four carrels are available for a semester, while 12 carrels are available for a year
Each carrel user is assigned a desk, chair, and a small cabinet
Carrels are shared, lockable study rooms located on the 2nd floor (south end, Heritage Wing)

Eligibility

These carrels are available for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in the Physical Sciences and Life Sciences Divisions. They are assigned according to the following priorities established in conjunction with the School of Graduate Studies:

Doctoral students (Division III and IV) in the 3rd year of candidacy of beyond – both carrel options
Post-doctoral fellows affiliated with the University (Divisions III and IV) – both carrel options
Doctoral students (Divisions III and IV) in their 2nd year of candidacy – both carrel options
Full-time master’s students (Divisions III and IV) – semester long carrels only

Renewals

Year-long carrel users may renew their carrels to a maximum of 3 years.

Semester-long carrel users may renew their carrels to a maximum of 2 semesters.

FAQs

What can I and can’t I do in my carrel at Gerstein?: A carrel is not an office. The carrel is restricted to quiet, research-related work. Eating is not allowed in the carrel but drinks in closed containers are permitted.
Keep windows closed in the carrels to avoid wildlife visits.
For safety and security purposes, the windows and doors cannot be obstructed.
The Carrel Usage Agreement includes all regulations pertaining to carrel use. You agree to follow these rules upon application submission. As these are shared study spaces, students assigned a carrel are expected to follow these regulations and be respectful of the needs of other occupants.
Repeated violations of carrel use may result in the cancellation of your assigned carrel.
How do I apply for a carrel at Gerstein?: Complete the carrel application form. New applications are accepted all year subject to availability.
How do I find out if I have been successful in applying for a carrel at Gerstein?: You will be contacted by email to come in and claim the carrel if you are a successful applicant. You may inquire about your application by emailing ask.gerstein@utoronto.ca.
