Copyright Modules: Copyright for Teaching and Learning Activities

The University of Toronto (U of T) takes its copyright obligations seriously, recognizing the legal rights and interests both of copyright owners and of those who use copyright-protected work in their teaching and scholarship. This open course provides U of T faculty, students, and staff with a general overview of copyright through seven short, self-directed instructional modules. These modules are intended to help the U o f T community ensure that their professional activities comply with Canadian copyright law.

How can you access these modules? 

Any University of Toronto community member can access these modules through Quercus: https://q.utoronto.ca/courses/173043

Enrollment in this course is not required. This will allow the individual user to determine whether they want to complete the modules all in one go, or visit content on an as needed basis. 

What do these modules cover? 

This course includes seven modules and resources for U of T specific support. 

  1. Introduction
  2. How does copyright law apply at my university?
  3. When do I need to think about copyright?
  4. The balancing act: what rights do copyright holders have?
  5. The balancing act: what can I do with copyright-protected works?
  6. What do I need to know about licensing?
  7. Openly licensed material 

Each module includes a: 

  • Short video: About 4 to 6 minutes in length
  • Transcript of the narration from the corresponding video: Depending on your preferred learning style, you might choose to simply read the text-based content. The transcripts also contain helpful links for you to explore and learn more.
  • Quiz: The quizzes at the end of each module are learning tools; results are not monitored or retained
