University of Toronto Press (UTP) and the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) have partnered on a new initiative to advance the wide dissemination of scholarly monographs in the humanities and social sciences. The initiative, which will fund the publication of up to three free, open access (OA) digital editions of the high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship UTP is renowned for in each of the next three years (2019-2021), will focus exclusively on publication of monographs written by University of Toronto (U of T) faculty members.
This new partnership is modeled after similar collaborative efforts like that of TOME: Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem, a joint initiative of the Association of American Universities (AAU), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and the Association of University Presses (AUP) in 2017. Like its predecessors, the UTP-UTL initiative seeks to increase the amount of high-quality, peer-reviewed humanities and social science (HSS) scholarship that is freely available online, further underscoring the value of this area of work. More particularly, this partnership seeks to expand the discovery and dissemination of the scholarship of U of T faculty making work open to researchers around the world. UTL has agreed to fund up to three open access digital monographs with publishing grants of $15,000 over each of the next three years.
Policy Transformation in Canada: Is the Past Prologue? Edited by Carolyn Hughes Tuohy, Sophie Borwein, Peter John Loewen, and Andrew Potter is the first open access monograph available through this partnership. Since it went online, the anthology has received interest from researchers throughout Canada and the United States as well as in countries such as China and Germany.
UTP will continue its participation in TOME and will also publish and distribute print editions of the works selected for this OA initiative as they have done with OA titles published as part of the Knowledge Unlatched initiative. For more information and updates on UTP publications visit utorontopress.com.
